Causes of magnesium deficiency

28. January 2026

A magnesium deficiency can manifest itself in several ways. Frequently mentioned signs include muscle cramps, which can occur particularly in the calves. Muscle tension in the neck, shoulder and upper back area, as well as eyelid twitching, are also associated with magnesium deficiency.

What is magnesium deficiency?

The technical term for magnesium deficiency is hypomagnesaemia, referring to a reduced concentration of magnesium in the blood. The normal magnesium concentration in the blood is in the range of 0.85 to 1.1 mmol/litre. Values below this range may indicate a deficiency.

Good to know: Even with normal magnesium levels in the blood, there may be insufficient intake. The body can compensate for fluctuations in blood levels to a certain extent by mobilising magnesium from the body’s own stores, such as from the bones.

A reduced total amount of magnesium in the body is therefore not always immediately apparent in your bloodwork. Indications may also arise independently of this.

What causes reduced magnesium intake?

Our body cannot make magnesium itself. It is therefore important that we consume enough of it every day. However, many of us simply don’t eat foods with high magnesium content often enough. People who have an unbalanced diet and frequently eat unhealthy fast food or junk food tend to have a magnesium deficiency. A diet or fasting regimen can also lead to the body not getting enough magnesium.

What impairs magnesium absorption?

Magnesium deficiency can also be related to the fact that the absorption (resorption) of magnesium in the intestine is restricted. This can have various causes, such as certain illnesses or the intake of individual medicines.

How does magnesium deficiency manifest itself?

Magnesium deficiency can become apparent through increased excitability of muscles and nerves. Possible signs can vary in how pronounced they are.

The following complaints are frequently associated with magnesium deficiency:

Muscle cramps

Muscle and calf cramps, as well as cramps in the hands, feet or toes, occur frequently, especially at night. The tendency to have calf cramps can increase with age.

Muscle tension

Muscle tension is often associated with elevated physical tension and can occur concurrently with stress or nervousness, for example.

Muscle twitching

Involuntary muscle movements, such as twitching of the eyelids, are also frequently described. In some cases, other areas of the face may also be affected.

What effects can an inadequate magnesium supply have?

In addition to acute complaints such as muscle cramps and tension, insufficient magnesium intake can also affect other bodily functions.
